Maggie Steber is a documentary photographer whose work focuses on humanistic issues and kinship and the challenges of everyday life.She has photographed in 64 countries. For over three decades, Steber has worked in Haiti. Aperture published her monograph, DANCING ON FIRE. In 2013 Steber was named as one of eleven Women of Vision by National Geographic Magazine, publishing a book and touring an exhibition in five cities.
Steber has served as the Asst. Managing Editor of Photography and Features at The Miami Herald, overseeing projects that won a Pulitzer and were twice finalists for the award. Her work is included in the Library of Congress and The Richter Library as well as the San Diego Museum of Photography and many other private collections. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the world and United States including as distinguished guest in 2008 to the Pingyao Photo Festival where she exhibited her longtime work on Native Americans and made the main evening presentation. That was her third exhibition in China. She has exhibited twice at Visa Pour L’Image in Perpignan, France, and at the Jardins du Luxumbourg in Paris as part of the 20th anniversary exhibition of Reporters Sans Frontieres.
She has served as judge on numerous photographic competitions, grants, including the Alexia Foundation and at the World Press Photo Foundation as well as Pictures of the Year.

MYSTERY MIAMI

Join world-renowned photojournalist, editor and instructor Maggie Steber on a nighttime search for photographic mystery in the streets of Miami. After dusk, Miami changes into a film set, simultaneously dark and mysterious, bright and sensuous, against which any number of dramas are played out in the night.
Miami, where people come to make a new name or lose an old identity, to seek fame and fortune or to hide out from it, where the rich party the night away in clubs, while the homeless look for a safe place to sleep...we find the perfect setting for NOIR MIAMI. We will use the city as a backdrop as each photographer takes on the theme of “Mystery”, creating an essay inspired by the sights of the city. We will review Maggie’s own projects that explore the darker side of film noir, as well as, the work of other photographers that have used this genre to build bodies of work uniquely their own.
Scheduled to coincide with Art Basel, we will take advantage of the crowded streets and venture out to shoot at night. Over the course of four days, you will experience a mix of lectures, class assignments and daily critiques, designed to push you to consider new ways of looking at your photography. Each photographer will be asked to interpret the concept of “Mystery in his or her own way, resulting in a final presentation on Saturday night.
WHO SHOULD REGISTER FOR THIS WORKSHOP?
Our small class size will allow for individual guidance, however, students are expected to have a basic understanding of their camera functions and operation. This is not a “how to” or technically focused program. Photographers who are ready for honest feedback with an interest in discovering new ways to tell stories will get the most from this experience.
Students will spend the evenings following lectures to shoot on the street.

Final Projects are presented during the Miami Street Photography Festival.

The Leica Akademie will provide a selection of Leica cameras for students to use during this course.
