Juan Jose Reyes is the founder and Executive Director of the Miami Street Photography Festival, the largest and most widely recognized event in this genre.

He also co-founded the festival’s European partner, Street Photo Milano, offering a combined international platform that provides participating photographers with true worldwide exposure of their work.

Juan started photographing in his college years and has been shooting street photography exclusively since 2008 after learning directly from world-renowned teachers Jay Maisel and Alex Webb. He writes a street photography blog and his articles, as well as his images, have been published in all the popular street photography sites.

As executive director of MSPF, Juan oversees the panel judging of the “MSPF Finalists”, the final cut from among thousands of images submitted each year to MSPF and widely recognized as the best of contemporary street photography. He also runs MSPF-Workshops, which offers street photography workshops around the world with the best street and documentary photographers and educators.

His teaching method is based on the Five Levels of Street Photography And The Three Styles of SP. This is a structured approach that he developed after ten years of learning from all the world-class speakers that have been featured at the Miami Street Photography Festival.

In 2012 he started the Miami Street Photography Festival which has grown since then into a major international event held every December in Miami during Art Basel Miami, one of the leading art fairs in the world. MSPF is an international festival showcasing the best of contemporary street and documentary photography and has featured some of the best names in photography such as David Alan Harvey, Constantine Manos, Susan Meiselas, Bruce Gilden, Alex Webb, Martin Parr and many others. MSPF offers talks, lectures, portfolio reviews and exhibitions as well as contests that are open to anyone around the world.

In 2018 Juan developed Street Photo Milano with the goal of creating a cultural exchange where photographers can have their work exhibited in galleries in two major cities. Every year thousands of people attend exhibitions in both cities.

Juan was born in Paraguay and moved to the United States over thirty years ago to practice medicine. He is a board-certified paediatrician and besides photography, he is very interested in wellness and integrative medicine. He is also a meditation teacher and practitioner and currently lives in Fort Lauderdale, FL

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

SOUTH BEACH MIAMI - HOLLYWOOD BEACH BOARDWALK

This is an in-person workshop where you will learn basic and advanced concepts of street photography and how to create images that are interesting, compelling, and with the potential to win photo contests. Juan has developed a framework based on his Five Levels and Three Styles of street photography, that will help you make and select winning images. This framework was developed after ten years of experience with world-class photographers featured in the Miami Street Photography Festival.

The workshop is designed to help you identify photos that could be selected as finalists in most street photography contests based on Juan's experience overseeing the panel judging of the “MSPF Finalists”, the final cut from among thousands of images submitted to the largest street photography contest in the world and widely recognized as the best of contemporary street photography.

The Boardwalk at Hollywood Beach and Miami's South Beach are by far the best places to shoot street photography in South Florida. There are lots of colors, great light, plenty of interesting subjects and ..the beach!! Juan has been shooting almost exclusively in this area for the last 3 years and is finishing a book, called The Beach is My Street,  based on this project.

We can also choose to shoot in other areas in Miami and the Fort Lauderdale area.

Juan will walk with the group and show you the best spots on SoBe and the Boardwalk. You can choose to shoot with the group, along with Juan, or completely on your own. Some people prefer a little bit of guidance and some are more experienced, so either way is fine and it's up to you. We will meet every morning to review the work and receive feedback. Juan will share a structured way that you can easily apply to select your best photos and submit them to contests.

Some of the topics we will cover:
•    Basics of street photography, definition and boundaries, equipment etc
•    Do’s and Don’ts when shooting on the streets
•    The Three Types
of Street Photographers
•    The Five Levels of Street Photography
•    The three key elements to help you decide if it’s a winning image
•    The one question to ask yourself every time you edit your photos
